Suzie Carpena’s Travel to Japan

Susie Carpena (30 Mar – 3 Apr 2014) went to Japan (Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe) with friend Dina Sanchez, balae of U.P. Pres. Pascual (with her in last photo, taken in Kobe, in front of the former residence of Germany’s ambassador to Japan), to enjoy the beauty of the country’s “sakura” among other things.

Loyalty Day Lunch Salu-salo

After the traditional Loyalty Day parade, the alumni proceeded to the new spacious Copeland gym for lunch and fellowship.

The celebrating alumni classes (ending with 2 and 7) presented skits and dances. This year’s golden jubilarians BSA Class 62 presented a dance number complete with canes and hats for the men and cabaret style skirts for the ladies.

Among the BSA Class 62 members, we remember seeing Tony Perez, Ellen Bautista, Billy Gualberto, Tony Frio and Annie Labadan, Albert Chiongbian, Jimmy Lagdameo, Precy Huab, Alice Arejola, Lolit Lim-Vega, Renato Gonzales and Sammy Mancebo.

Visit to Emil’s and Bert’s Farms: Trying Very Hard Syndrome

Classmates Emil Javier and Bert Coronel are now full time farmers — Emil with his vegetables in his two farms in Puypuy, Bay and Masiit, Calauan and Bert in his tree orchard in Calauan.

The members of the class were treated to a quick visit to Emil’s farms and a leisurely native lunch salo-salo in Bert’s farm.

Emil grows a number of vegetables in rotation with rice. He grows ampalaya (bitter gourd) patola and upo in trellises; chilli pepper and tomatoes in raised beds with plastic mulch; sweet corn and glutinous corn and watermelon, cantaloupe, honey dew and squash.

According to Classmate Emil, he is trying to prove two things — 1) that he can raise 3-4 crops on the same piece of land in one year, and 2) that he can make money from the effort.

Alma Javier, Emil’s spouse and treasurer, is confident her spouse will make good on the first objective but has yet to see promising signs on the second, bottom line objective.

Visit to the Los Banos Gawad Kalinga Housing Project

Though retired many years over, members of UPCA Class 60 continue to contribute their share in community, profession and nation building.

As President Emil remarked in the installation of the bird bath cum stone marker in the Sam Trelease/Emma Sarepta-Yule minipark, members of Class 60 belong to the TVH generation — trying very hard to excel and be of added value (even in the twilight of their years).

The perfect example of this perseverance and persistence is the Los Banos Gawad Kalinga housing project which was spearheaded by classmate Ruben Villareal and his spouse Cora. To date the Los Banos GK project has built 238 houses for as many indigent families who were persuaded to leave their dismal and perilous lodgings along the PNR railroad tracks and the creeks on the eastern slopes of Mount Makiling.

Ruben and Cora brought the Class 60 visitors to the GK site and saw for themselves the small but decent houses, the livelihood community center and the airy, well-designed chapel.

Class 60 Adds Birdbath cum Stone Marker to the Sam Trelease/Emma Sarepta-Yule Minipark

The Sam Trelease/Emma Sarepta Yule minipark featuring the Old Humanities department portal is a continuing project of Class 60. This year we added a birdbath cum stone marker to attract birds (and people) to the minipark.

On the stone marker we inscribed the following quote from the UPCA hymn which all of us have learned to sing with feeling about our Alma Mater:

…There is no place more charming, blest with God’s most bounteous gifts.

Dean L.B. Uichanco 1919
UPCA Hymn

Seated L-R: Emil (innermost), Ruben, Waldy, Regalado, Roger

Architect Professor Susan Aquino-Ong of the Department of Horticulture who had been helping Class 60 in our landscaping projects pro-bono, suggested that we make the Trelease/Yule minipark a repository of shade-loving indigenous ornamentals.

Classmate Rose Niduaza started the initiative by donating several plants from her garden.
